Snow Storm Negatively Impacts Community Blood Supply
All Collection Operations Cancelled on Saturday, March 8th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CINCINNATI (March 10, 2008) –
The snow storm that blanketed the tri-state on Friday and Saturday resulted in the closure of nine Hoxworth Neighborhood Donor Centers and the cancellation of one blood drive. Those scheduled donors were needed in order to maintain the minimum inventory of our 29 hospitals. To remedy this shortage, Hoxworth Blood Center requests that donors of all blood types give at a blood drive or donor center this week to replenish the blood supply.

Additional reasons for the shortage include heavy usage at local hospitals. Approximately 44% of the population is either O+ or O- (38% O+ and 6% O-). Hospitals and trauma centers can't function without Type O blood, the most common blood type.

You are urged to donate at one of Hoxworth’s nine neighborhood donor centers or community blood drives. In times of shortages, walk-ins are always welcome or you can schedule an appointment by calling (513) 451-0910 or (800) 830-1091.

Donors can obtain the results of the screening three days after the blood donation, by phone only. Hoxworth will provide each donor at the time of donation a unique ID number and phone number to call.
