10 Reasons to make donating blood your New Year’s Resolution 1. Donating blood is safe and easy, and a great way to give back to your community. 2. People donate blood out of a sense of duty and community spirit. 3. The actual blood donation usually takes less than ten minutes. The entire process -- from the time you sign in to the time you leave -- takes about an hour. 4. All the blood donated to Hoxworth stays in our community and will be used for patients in our local hospitals. 5. To maintain an adequate supply for the hospitals, Hoxworth needs 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors each day. 6. Much of today's medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from healthy donors. 7. You blood donation is separated into three parts (red blood cells, platelets and plasma) and could go to three different patients in need. 8. Many donors give just platelets, which are like tiny bandages that make your blood clot, and give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live. 9. You cannot get AIDS or any other infectious disease by donating blood. 10. January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month and now is great time to become a blood donor.
Donating blood is safe and easy. You must be at least 17 years old and in good health. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and bring identification to donate.
