Hoxworth Blood Center Researcher Receives Honor

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati is pleased to announce that Dr. Jose Cancelas, MD, PhD, has been selected as “Innovator” at the 2010 Health Care Heroes Awards.  The award was given to Cancelas, Thursday, Mar 4, 2010, at the Annual Business Courier event held at the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati downtown.  This program recognized individuals who have made an impact through their concern for patients, their research and inventions, their management skills, and their service to the poor and uninsured.  Cancelas was chosen from among 6 Cincinnati–area finalists in his category.

“I am grateful to be part of Hoxworth Blood Center and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.  I am very proud of the work that our teams have accomplished and I am humbled to accept this award,” said Cancelas.  “I would also like to acknowledge the work that all the employees at Hoxworth do to save the lives of the patients in our area hospitals”.

Dr. Cancelas joined Hoxworth Blood Center in 2003 as Division Director of Research.  Hoxworth’s Research Division is a leader in project development research and contributes to the advancement of transfusion medicine, including clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of transfusion medicine related products. 

“We are fortunate to have such an innovative leader on our team at Hoxworth.  We celebrate Dr. Cancelas’ award and champion his continued research in the field of transfusion medicine,” said Dr. Ronald Sacher, director of Hoxworth Blood Center.

Dr. Cancelas received his MD from Autonomous University, his specialist degree from Hospital Ramon y Cajal and his PhD from the Universidad de Alcala de Hernares; all in Madrid, Spain.  Following post doctoral studies at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Dr. Cancelas served as Visiting scientist-Research Associate at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and completed a fellowship with Hoxworth Blood Center.

Founded in 1938, Hoxworth serves 32 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana.  Annually, Hoxworth collects over 90,000 units of blood from local donors.  At least 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors are essential each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients.
