Winter Weather Impacts Blood Supply
Hoxworth calls on donors to avoid blood shortage
Severe weather has begun to impact blood donations
o Blood drive cancellations reduced daily collections Tuesday by more than 50%.
o Neighborhood Donor Centers expect to lose nearly 70% of daily collections Tuesday.
o An additional 300 donations may be lost this week due to potential high school blood drive cancellations.
CURRENT BLOOD SUPPLIES
Platelets supplies are currently low.
o Platelet donors needed immediately to meet local needs, especially for cancer patients.
Red blood cell supplies are currently adequate.
o Weather impact this week could lead to a shortage without additional donors.
NATIONAL WEATHER REDUCES AVAILABILITY
If a shortage did occur in the Tri-State area, there is little expectation blood products could be obtained from other parts of the U.S. due to severe weather elsewhere.
