2nd Annual Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati along with the Allen Temple AME Church, is working to increase the number of minority blood donors by hosting the 2nd Annual Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive.  Now more than ever, the need for minority education and participation in the blood donation process is needed to ensure that the community maintains an adequate blood supply for all patients served in the tri-state area.

Hoxworth Blood Center invites everyone to honor the contribution of an important African American medical pioneer and physician, Dr. Charles R. Drew.  Dr. Drew’s research in the field of blood transfusion led to the improved techniques of blood storage and large scale blood banks during World War II.

“A blood donation in Dr. Drew’s memory is a perfect way to acknowledge his contributions”, says Hoxworth Director, Dr. Ronald Sacher.  “The goal for the day will be to educate, increase awareness and successfully develop repeat donors that will support our community blood supply”.

Please join Hoxworth Blood Center in saluting Dr. Charles R. Drew and his accomplishments by making a blood donation at Allen Temple AME Church at Jordan Crossing, Life Management Institute-Room 304, located at 7030 Reading Road in Cincinnati on Wednesday, June 3rd between the hours of 11:30am and 6:00pm.

All donors will be automatically registered to win a pair of tickets to the 2009 Macy’s Music Festival!  Two winners will be selected.

How to Donate:
Donating blood is safe and easy. You must be at least 17 years old (16 with a signed parental consent) and in good health. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and bring identification to donate. It is recommended that donors eat a good meal and drink plenty of water within four hours before donating.

Please call Allen Temple AME Church at (513) 531-7539 to schedule your appointment.   Hoxworth recognizes that your time is valuable. We will give priority to donors who have scheduled an appointment. Walk-in donors are welcome and will be seen as soon as possible.

About Hoxworth:
Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, is celebrating over 70 years of saving lives. Founded in 1938, we serve 32 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects on average over 90,000 units of blood from local donors. At least 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors are essential each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients.

Minority Outreach Recruitment and Education:
Together we can make a difference as Hoxworth Blood Center brings MORE (Minority Outreach Recruitment and Education) into YOUR community.  Our mission is to address the under-representation of minority blood donors in the provision of health-care initiatives aimed at optimally utilizing minority donations to reduce adverse consequences of random donor transfusion, primarily in the Sickle Cell patient community.   For additional information about MORE and how you can become involved, please contact the Hoxworth Blood Center Appointment Center at (513) 451-0910.   Ask for the Minority Outreach Recruitment and Education representative.
