updated: Friday, April 27, 2007 - 1 p.m. Critical Shortage of Type O Negative Blood On Friday morning, Hoxworth Blood Center was notified by University Hospital that a car accident victim is currently using a considerable amount of type O negative blood. Hospital officials have not released how many units of blood the patient has used, however there is a potential that this one patient could deplete Hoxworth's type O negative inventory. As of early Friday, Hoxworth had only 12 units of O negative blood in reserve. Type O negative is a rare blood type. Only eight percent of the population is type O negative. Hoxworth is urging all type O negative blood donors to contact the blood center immediately to arrange a donation. The phone number for Hoxworth is (513) 451-0910. #### April 24, 2007 Critical Need for Blood Donors Hoxworth Blood Center is issuing a critical appeal for donors with all blood types, especially Type O. As of Tuesday morning, the community’s blood supply was down 475 units, in type O+ and O- combined, the types in greatest demand at local hospitals. (one unit = one pint) The reasons for the shortage are increased blood usage at local hospitals and below average collections. "We’re asking all individuals to donate at their earliest convenience," said Michael Anderson, spokesperson for Hoxworth. “This situation is very serious, and we do not expect to be back to normal levels for at least a week.” If volunteer donors do not help this week with the critical shortage, blood inventories at local hospitals could soon be at dangerously low levels. Area hospitals, particularly trauma centers, can't function without Type O blood, the most common blood type. Approximately 44% of the population is either O+ or O- (38% O+ and 6% O-). How to donate:
• Age: At least 17 years old and in good general health. There is no upper age limit. • Weight: Minimum of 110 pounds. • Identification: Must provide photo I.D. • Food: Eat a good meal within four hours before giving. • Drink: Drink plenty of water or juice before and after donating. Hoxworth operates donation centers in Anderson, Blue Ash, UC, Downtown, Ft. Mitchell, Ft. Thomas, Mason, Tri-County and Western Hills. Operating days and hours vary with each center. Hoxworth Blood Center at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center needs to collect from 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients. Hoxworth, founded in 1938, serves 28 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects over 94,000 units of blood from local volunteer donors. comments@hoxworth.org Copyright © 2007 Hoxworth Blood Center | Member: America's Blood Centers |
