Hoxworth is offering this incentive to give blood as a response to a significant shortage of donors this summer. “Summertime is always a difficult time to recruit donors,” said Michael Anderson, spokesperson for Hoxworth. “Many of our regular donors are on vacation or out of school, while usage at hospitals can go up.” Summer shortages are not unique to Hoxworth. In the last month, blood centers in Dayton, Indianapolis and Lexington have all had similar shortages. As of Tuesday morning, the community’s blood supply was down over 400 units (about 40 percent) in Type O, the most common blood type. Donors can call (513) 451-0910 to make an appointments for today or walk-in’s will be taken on a first come-first serve basis. Donation centers open on Tuesday, July 25, 2006: - Hoxworth Blue Ash: Noon to 7:45 p.m. - Hoxworth HQ at UC: 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. - Hoxworth Downtown: 9:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. - Hoxworth Ft. Thomas: Noon to 7:45 p.m. - Hoxworth Tri-County: Noon to 7:45 p.m. - Hoxworth Western Hills: Noon to 7:45 p.m. Hoxworth Blood Center at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center needs to collect from 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients. Hoxworth, founded in 1938, serves 28 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects over 90,000 units of blood from local volunteer donors. -###- comments@hoxworth.org
