Duke Energy Ohio Awards Hoxworth $2500 for High School Blood Donor Campaign

The Cinergy Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Duke Energy Ohio (formerly known as The Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co.), has awarded the Hoxworth Blood Center $2500 for the promotion of blood donation to area high school students. The grant is part of more than $2.9 million dollars that the Cinergy Foundation has awarded in Ohio so far this year.

"We have a long history of supporting charitable organizations in the communities we serve, and that tradition continues as we combine with Duke Energy," said Cinergy Foundation President Joe Hale. "We are joining with a company that shares our values when it comes to community involvement and philanthropy."

Hoxworth conducts blood drives and educational activities at over 100 high schools in 17 greater Cincinnati counties. About 11,000 high school students roll up their sleeves to give blood each year, which accounts for 12 percent of Hoxworth's annual collections. Hoxworth also awards individual college scholarships to high school seniors.

"High school students are the future blood donors for our community," said Hoxworth spokesperson Michael Anderson. "With support from organizations such as the Cinergy Foundation, we can continue to build our high school campaigns and give students even more opportunities to save lives."

Hoxworth Blood Center at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center needs to collect from 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients. Hoxworth, founded in 1938, serves 27 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects over 90,000 units of blood from local volunteer donors.
