updated: March 23, 2006 New Technology Now Available To Lower LDL Cholesterol Levels Hoxworth Blood Center is pleased to provide state of the art treatment technology for your patients to significantly reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. The procedure, called LDL Apheresis (Wiki definition), removes low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, from the blood while maintaining the “good” high-density lipoproteins (HDL). We will be using the Kaneka Liposorber LA-15 system. This system selectively binds and removes Apo-B containing lipoproteins (LDL, Lp(a) and VLDL) from the plasma of high risk patients for whom diet and maximum drug therapy have been ineffective or not tolerated. The Liposorber LA-15 system has been approved by the FDA and is covered for indicated patients by most insurance and managed care plans. ![]() Many physicians have expressed an interest in enrolling patients in this program. Once a prospective patient has been identified, We will contact the patient for initial orientation and access evaluation as well as precertify for insurance reimbursement. Each patient must be enrolled in a Patient Registry prior to initial treatment. The purpose of this registry is monitoring of the long term safety and efficacy of Liposorber therapy by the FDA. Once this has been completed, we will notify your office of enrollment and keep you informed as to pre and post procedure laboratory data for your patients. Please contact Hoxworth's Therapeutic Apheresis Department for more information: - Sue Pinkard, Manager, Therapeutic Apheresis, (513) 558-1333 - Dr. Patricia Carey, Hoxworth's Medical Director, (513) 558-1338
