Hoxworth Blood Center Transfusion Service at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC)
The Hoxworth Blood Center Transfusion Service at CCHMC is responsible for the pre-transfusion testing and provision of blood and blood components for the 490-bed Level I Trauma Center.
This is one of the more unique transfusion services in the Greater Cincinnati area in that the population served is made up of patients ranging from birth to 30 years of age. This transfusion service also supports the Fetal Care Surgical program, one of few programs in the country capable of performing intrauterine fetal surgery.
Because the patient population is somewhat unique, the transfusion service manufactures and provides “boutique” blood and blood components that address critical care issues to avoid transfusion related complications such as volume overload and transfusion associated graft versus host disease.
The transfusion service strives to provide the highest quality testing and component manufacturing. The service is licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), accredited by AABB and accredited by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988. The transfusion service also participates in internal quality control programs and external quality assurance and proficiency programs, such as those provided by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
In FY08, approximately 50,000 discrete tests and procedures were performed for CCHMC patients. Over 18,150 total components were transfused to CCHMC patients. This laboratory also provides testing services and component provision for several community healthcare agencies and short-stay surgical and medical hospitals in Hamilton and Butler counties.
Daily onsite operations are managed by Michelle Bailey MT(ASCP), Supervisor Transfusion Service. This department operates under the direction of Patricia Carey, MD, Medical Director and Division Director Clinical Services. The transfusion service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week including holidays. A staff of nine covers all operational hours.
