Overview and Objectives
Purpose The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Hoxworth Blood Center is designed to offer physicians career development training which will enable them to assume leadership positions as Directors/Medical Directors of regional or community blood centers or hospital transfusion services.
The program has 6 full-time faculty members, each representing one or more special interests within the general field of Transfusion Medicine. Active research interest of the faculty include cytokine control of hematopoiesis, hemostasis, blood component production and storage, and stem cell biology.
Location of Training Training is conducted primarily at Hoxworth Blood Center, a division of the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. It is the only blood center in the country located within a large, university medical center. Hoxworth Blood Center distributes over 300,000 blood components annually. Hoxworth is the transfusion service for Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Shriners Children's Hospital, Cincinnati. The trainees also take call at University Hospital. Because of this, there are unique opportunities to participate in the evaluation and resolution of clinical problems associated with an active trauma center and transplantation center for heart, liver, kidney, and stem cells. Transfusion support for neonatal and oncology patients provides an additional facet to the fellow's education.
Hoxworth is located on the grounds of the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. One of the advantages of the affiliation with the Academic Health Center is the availability of the Health Sciences Library (formerly referred to as the Academic Information Technology and Libraries or AIT&L) and UCiT. Both services encompass and support the Health Sciences Library, the Nursing Library, the Center for the History of the Health Professions, and information technology units that support computing at the University of Cincinnati (UC) Academic Health Center.
