Donating blood saves lives
and it may save your life, too.
With donors benefits such as a free cholesterol screening, a mini-physical and frequency programs, why not donate? All blood and platelet donors at Hoxworth must pass a mini-physical before each donation and sometimes physical problems such as high blood pressure are found. Preliminary studies have also found that heart attacks and other cardiac problems were less common in men who donate blood versus those who do not. A person's risk of heart disease is influenced by many factors. One important indicator is the presence of an elevated cholesterol level. As a thanks to you for donating, Hoxworth now performs a non-fasting total serum cholesterol level screening test. Because this testing is not done on a fasting specimen, it should be considered a screening test only. Donors can retrieve their results in approximately three days by calling Hoxworth’s cholesterol hotline. A total Cholesterol level reading below 200mg/dl is desirable. Once donors receive their results it is highly recommend that this information is shared with a family physician, especially if the result is higher than the desirable level. He or she can then determine if additional testing is advisable.
