Donate Blood - Overview Overview | FAQ | Where to Donate | Double Red Cell Donation Every day, people like you "make a difference" in Greater Cincinnati by sharing their good health. They do it by giving blood for the patients in our community. At least 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors are needed daily to meet patients' needs of 28 greater Cincinnati hospital. Blood is a fragile product and cannot be stored indefinitely in its liquid state. To make sure there is always enough blood for patients, healthy members of the community must donate regularly. As long as healthy volunteer donors keep replenishing the community blood supply, there will always be enough blood for you, your family, your friends, or anyone who needs a transfusion. Unfortunately, about 36 percent of people nationwide are under the impression that a blood donor can be infected with the AIDS virus by donating blood. This is simply not true. The equipment used to draw blood at Hoxworth's various neighborhood donor centers is sterilized by the manufacturer, used once and then destroyed. Thus, transmission of AIDS in this manner is not possible.
