Hoxworth Blood Center Celebrating 70th Anniversary
Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, is celebrating 70 years of saving lives. At least 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors are essential each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients. Founded in 1938, we serve 29 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects over 90,000 units of blood from local donors.

Success Stories

Erick Passalacqua was born at just 25 weeks and weighed just over one pound. He received frequent blood transfusions throughout the first month of his life. Today he's a happy, healthy, six-year-old and loves attending elementary school.

Jennifer Reckers was diagnosed on January 18, 2002 with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). She was hit so hard and so fast she almost didn’t make it. She received platelets during the course of her two years of treatment. Today, six-year-old Jennifer is in the first grade and her favorite activity is dance class.

Jasmine Fenton was only two months old when her parents learned that she had Sickle Cell Anemia. She experienced two strokes before age four. Currently, Jasmine receives blood exchanges as a part of her ongoing treatment. Thanks to the continued support of blood donors Jasmine is a spunky and active seven-year-old.

Megan Brankamp was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) just two days before her third birthday. She is now nine years old and in February will celebrate four years with no complications since she finished her treatment in 2004. Her favorite activities include cheerleading and playing softball.
